These are just a few of the universal questions that most people ask at some point or another in their lifetime.
Depending on how you grew up, your experiences with people who claimed to know God, and whether or not you actually experienced the supernatural, you may or may not have strong convictions about wanting to find out. If you happen to be on the side of “if God looks like Christians, no thanks,” the good and bad news is that you’re not alone.
In my blog article entitled “Jesus Needs a Facelift” (I use that phrase a bit tongue- and-cheek), I discuss how the image of Jesus that most people see after spending time with people who identity themselves as Christians is not a very pretty one. According to polls conducted by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons, authors of unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks About Christianity … And Why It Matters, non-Christians aren’t impressed. These guys spent three years polling young, unchurched Americans to find out what they thought about Christianity. Millions of young people, they discovered, see Christians as judgmental, hypocritical, anti-homosexual, too political, insensitive – and boring.
Want to hear something even more disturbing? A shocking 50 percent of respondents said they base their negative views on personal contacts with Christians stating, “Many of those outside of Christianity… reject Jesus because they feel rejected by Christians.” Honestly, this perspective is a huge reason that I didn’t step foot in church or have anything to do with what I then called “organized religion” for over 18 years.
However, that was before I met God for reals for myself, and found out He was nothing like I had experienced or imagined. His face was beautiful – accepting, kind, positive, and full of joy! He wasn’t a bit surprised by anything I confided in Him, and He was honestly the best listener I’ve ever met.
Now, you may be wondering, did He actually materialize before my eyes? Did I have an out-of-body experience? No, nothing that dramatic happened.
I was simply taught how to recognize and hear His voice.
What was surprising was that He actually had been reaching out and speaking to me for a long time, in a lot of different ways. I just didn’t recognize it or know it was Him.
If you too want to meet Him, the best advice I can give you is to just say so.
Talk to Him like you talk to your best friend. In your head or out loud, it doesn’t matter – He hears your thoughts as well as He hears your words.
Tell Him you want to meet Him; tell Him you want to know what He’s like and that you want a real relationship with Him, based on who He really is rather than who you think He might be.
